Overview of Services

 

 Welcome to Transgenic, Knockout, and Tumor Model Center

 

Partly supported by funds from Stanford Cancer Institute, the Stanford Transgenic, Knockout, and Tumor Model Center is set to produce your transgenic, knockout and cancer mouse models. The facility provides low-cost DNA microinjection services, ES cell manipulation, microinjection and tumor modeling services to all Stanford as well as external investigators. The facility also provides services on timed pregnant females, strain rederivation, embryo and sperm cryopreservation and IVF procedures for resurrecting frozen sperm.  The Center can also provide transgenic animal tumor models and a variety of dosing/surgical services for in vitro and in vivo tumor studies.

 

Dr. Hong Zeng is the Director of the facility with responsibility for its daily operation.  Dr. Barry Behr is the Faculty Advisor who oversees the strategic direction of the facility. The facility has an advisory board consisting of Dr. Julien Sage (Pediatrics), Dr. Sherri Green (Comparative Medicine), and Dr. Dean Felsher (Oncology). Oversight is also provided by the Cancer Institute senior leadership to ensure that the needs of Cancer Institute members are met. Dr. Nirk Quispe Calla is the Associate Director, Dr. Lucy Kim, Jennifer Lin, Cesar Guzman and Jasmine Sosa are research staffs of the facility. 

 

For tumor model projects, the client should provide clear written instructions to the staff for proper execution of the project. TKTC will expend all reasonable efforts to follow the written instructions, but cannot guarantee the outcome of an experiment. If the instructions were followed properly, then any repeat experiments are the financial responsibility of the investigator. The repeat of a failed experiment by TKTC at it’s expense requires the prior approval of the director of TKTC.

If the investigators do not have pre-approved animal protocols, they are encouraged to contact us 1.5-2months before the expected start date of the experiment. TKTC will charge fees for writing it up or revising the protocol and getting it approved.

Eligibility

 

All Stanford investigators who have approved A-PLAC (Administrative Panel on Laboratory Animal Care) protocol numbers are eligible to use the facility's services. The facility has an approved protocol #12002 which covers the production of transgenic and knockout mice and protocol 33796 which cover the production of tumor-bearing mice. Investigators only need protocols for characterization of the transgenic and chimeric animals. It usually takes 4-6 weeks to get a protocol approved by APLAC; so you should plan ahead and have a protocol number ready when requesting the service.

 

External users who have an approved animal protocol and animal housing location are also eligible to use the services provided by the TKTC.

Pricing for External Users

 

Users not paying with an internal Stanford PTA will have to pay a Facilities and Administration (F&A) charge of 58% (starting 1 Sept. 2015).  Exceptions will be made for payments from Stanford Affiliates (organizations with a formal affiliation agreement with Stanford).

Publication Acknowledgment

 

As with all Stanford Service Centers, credit must be given to Stanford Transgenic, Knockout, and Tumor Model Center (TKTC) for data that results in a publication. If the work done at Stanford TKTC produces data resulting in a figure in a publication, you are required to acknowledge Stanford TKTC in the publication. Further, if Stanford TKTC staff members provided significant experimental design, data interpretation, or other intellectual contribution (as evaluated by the PI), then it is expected that these individuals will be coauthors on the publication.
