Sample Preparation Laboratory (SPL)

Overview of Services

Sample Preparation Laboratory (SPL)

The Sample Preparation Laboratory (SPL) has recently undergone renovation and is now reopening in phases. Laboratories are being brought online one at a time based on equipment readiness, safety approvals, and user demand.

At present, the Rock Saw Room (A54) is partially open to users. Additional rooms and instruments will become available as commissioning and safety reviews are completed.

The Sample Preparation Laboratory provides centralized sample preparation facilities, technical expertise, and training to users from departments within the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and other Stanford Schools.

The SPL is equipped for a range of sample preparation methods, including:

  • Sample crushing, grinding, and pulverization

  • Sample cutting, coring, drilling, and bulk-scale polishing

  • Sample hammering and sieving

  • Mineral density separation

  • Mineral separations by magnetic properties, density, and grain size (micro-scale)

  • Mineral dissolution

These workflows can be adapted to accommodate additional sample preparation needs. Please contact the Laboratory Manager to discuss specific requirements.

Facilities are available to Stanford-affiliated students, staff, faculty, and approved visitors. The SPL prioritizes safe operation of machinery and chemicals and emphasizes prevention of sample cross-contamination.

The Sample Preparation Laboratory consists of multiple lab rooms located in the sub-basement of the Mitchell Earth Sciences Building. Please navigate to the Equipment tab to learn more about the instruments available in each room and their current operational status.

For access to the lab rooms, review the training instructions under the Lab Access and Safety tab or contact the Laboratory Manager directly.
